Fat -Byte performs body composition estimates and much more by one digital image from your smartphone. It’s a valuable tool for monitoring your body fat, and to perform anthropometry to help refining body composition and well-being.
Fat estimates were validated confronting Fat-Byte to DXA examination (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) in a group of subjects with BMI 18 -33. http://www.mdpi.com/1424-8220/16/12/2163
The current lifestyle of many in the World has led to marked changes in the body composition of a high percentage of its citizens where way too many people are obese. It is now recognised that BMI is a relatively poor measure of body composition and dependence on it for determining intervention strategies can be misleading.
The use of personal health assessment in weight management is a burgeoning approach in management of overweight and obesity. An attraction of this preventive approach is the privacy and convenience of performing these activities at home.
This App allow users that can range from individuals, community health workers, sportspersons and medical professionals to obtain an accurate and rapid measure of body composition including fat mass using a mobile phone with our patented software.
The principle relies on obtaining a digital image of the subject taken laterally against a homogenous light coloured background- The software then converts the image into a two fundamental colour image from the eyes to the ankle. The raw image together with the subject’s, age, height, weight and gender is acquired either by built in camera or uploaded from memory into the phone App and the software after conditioning the image, gives an accurate estimate of body fat.
The software has been validated by comparing the data obtained from a range of subjects of differing body composition (BMI 18 >33) using the photo application with figures obtained using 2 different reference methods of dual energy X-ray absorptiometry and underwater weighing the first one to construct and the second to validate the fat estimating equation. The squared correlation coefficient between the two techniques was r 2 > 0.95 indicating that photo technique could be applied with confidence to a wide range of clinical and non-clinical applications.(1)(3)
A European patent application has been made (2), and it has been extended world-wide (PCT)
